Troubleshooting Hints für Ubuntu

gdm wird i.a. gestartet. (ev killall gdm) bei Neustart von X11
startx sollte X11 starten - fmsg's auf Konsole
[?] kann xorg.conf zum Test als Param verwendert werden?

XAUTH

X verteilt bei grafischem login ein session cookie /home/$user/.xauthority
diese kann nur der betreffende User lesen.

[] Problem userx möchte sich ein /home anschnallen. Vermutlich kann das cookie nicht zugeordnet werden.

common errors

xfix (in Ubuntu-Recovery) kreiert ein minimal xorg.conf

gdm

/var/log/gdm/:0.log (font related problems are frequent)
sudo fc-cache --fv (fc-cache creates indexes of fonts compatible with X.org's FreeType library in each font directory. This should let X find your fonts.)

apt-get --reinstall install xfonts-base
Is /usr/share/X11/fonts/misc/fonts.alias missing?
